Description Flywheel / Ring-gear locking tool Bolting up to an engine block this tool meshes with the ring-gear teeth of either a flywheel or flex-plate and stops the engine from turning. Requiring only finger-tightened bolts, this tool can be fitted or removed in under a minute. It can be then used to remove / accurately tension the bolts for various components such as the flywheel / flex-plate, clutch and main crank pulley. When working on the fasteners for the external rotating assembly there is the question of tension accuracy. Did you tighten it to the correct amount, or did a small movement from the engine throw off the intended tension? With one of these tools being fitted everything is held in place it allows someone to take their time in accurately and easily use a torque gauge / tension wrench every time. Considering that it’s not uncommon for flywheel bolts to fail from over-tensioning, this makes a lot of sense. Or another example is for the main crank pulley bolt which on a 4AGE engine is officially listed as requiring a considerable amount of torque at 140Nm / 101 Ft.lbf and if this bolt is not tensioned fully it can cause massive issues. Compatibility Depending on which variant is chosen this tool will suit the following models listed below. It will also suits both original and aftermarket flywheels: – [Option-1] – 3SGE Beams: Designed and tested on the Blacktop (Gen-5) 3SGE Beams engines, it may suit the Grey and Redtop Beams models also although this is untested. These WILL NOT SUIT the earlier 3SGE / 3SGTE engines. – [Option-2] – A-series engines: Suits all 4AGE / 4AGZE’s & other 4A / 7A models as well as the adapter below. Also suits our 4AGE / 7A to J160 adapters: The above tool is also compatible with those running one of our gearbox adapters. The A-series variant is used in this scenario. Note: this may require a very small amount of metal to be filed off the locking tool to clear a locating stud. Installation To use this tool simply fit it such that the painted line on the metal face of the tool is facing outwards, the supplied spacers between the tool and the engine / sandwich plate and the included bolts that are tightened up to anything that’s finger tight or more. It may require a slight turn of the engine for the teeth of the tool to line up with the ring gear teeth. For those using either of our 4AGE to to J160 gearbox adapters then it’s the same with the exception that no spacers are used and the tool is plated directly onto the face of the adapter plate. Installation video: To see a video where one of these tools is being used then please click here, this video is courtesy of the team at Speed Academy. The installation of this part starts at 0:50 in the video. Two product pictures show this installed on a 4age engine with the OEM sandwich plate and an aftermarket flywheel.
